The fungus, Sporothrix brasiliensis , is responsible for a disease called sporotrichosis. It primarily infects cats, which can develop skin sores and carry large amounts of the fungus. In some cases, infected cats can transmit the fungus to people through scratches, bites, or contact with infected wounds. This does not mean that all cats are dangerous.
